Sijya is an electronic musician and graphic designer from New Delhi, India, who lays down textural abstractions onto musical and visual canvases alike. Drawing a strong connection between the two with her music, the multi-faceted artist brings together untamed synth layers and raw rhythms with emotion-led vocal lines. Sijya’s concoction of art-pop, downtempo and ambient invites the listener in gently before covertly bringing them along on a gradual rebellion against preconceived notions of approach, forms and styles.
After studying at the National Institute of Design, Sijya started an independent practice, designing graphics for art, music & cultural institutions.
Striking the musical balance between the known and the outlier, the New Delhi act has steered a remarkable start to her career with the release of her debut single Have To Make My Bed as part of boxout.fm's compilation ‘SUCHI SELECTS’ and her debut EP Young Hate.
Released via British music royalty Matthew Herbert's Accidental Records, an institution known for launching artists with an independent-minded approach, the 6 tracks on ‘Young Hate’ and their respective music videos showcase Sijya's creative stamp as a music and visual artist at its most synchronous and far-ranging. Embodying the wave of fresh ideas and distinctive musicianship emerging from South Asia, the release has received support from notable outlets such as BBC 6Music, Crack Magazine, Kaltblut Magazine, NOWNESS, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Feel My Bicep, Rolling Stone India, The Wild City, A Humming Heart, Indian Express and Rinse.FM.
Her meticulousness, commitment to originality without sacrificing emotionality, and strong creative control over her artistic trajectory have also led her to make her debut as a live performer with the prestigious opening slot at India's premier music festival Magnetic Fields and end the year with multiple features proclaiming her “One To Watch”.
